COMMENTS FROM RICHARD MARTIN,
CHAIRMAN & FOUNDER OF CHILDREN OF PEACE

It has been estimated that some 35 trillion dollars in international funding has reached Israel and Palestine since 1950. Yet, the conflict still continues and the children still endure grievous physical and mental anguish. In Gaza alone, 60% of the population are children under the age of 17 and whose parents subsist on just $2 a day - the UN definition of poverty. Palestinian children have the highest level of childhood diabetes in the region and Israeli children suffer unusually high levels of anxiety and morbidity.

Children in the region - Bedouin, Christian, Druze, Jewish, Muslim & Sufi - are paying a disproportionate price for the conflict, yet still remain its forgotten victims.

It is clear that alongside raising awareness of the plight of children, we need to establish an international policy goal that targets neglected grassroots groups through finely tuned funding that focuses upon sustainable, replicable projects and programmes centred upon cooperation and peaceful coexistence between communities.

That's why our unique Coalition of Peace acts as a model for the region. Dozens of grassroots groups in Israel & Palestine - many of whom are missed by the big international funders - have signed up to our peace policy as affiliates and with a resolute commitment to protect the children, regardless of culture, faith, gender or heritage.

SUPPORT OUR WINTER APPEAL

Dame Judi Dench is calling on your support for the 2009-2010 Children of Peace Winter Appeal - Schools Aid. We really do need your help. Many children in the region endure great hardship trying to study at school. Basic resources that we take for granted are often not available and sophisticated equipment like AV or computer technology an impossible dream. We want to change that. And we can with your help. So do please think of the children during Christmas, Chanukkah or Eid and donate to this very worthy cause.

PALESTINIAN ELECTIONS

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called for new elections to be held on January 24th 2010.The President issued the decree for presidential and parliamentary elections to be held in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. At Children of Peace we hope that the outcome of the election will lead to a greater opportunity for peace and hope for the children and their families in the region.

THANK YOU

In recent months I have been invited to give talks on Children of Peace and our message of reconciliation and the protection of all children in the region. I have been greatly moved by the welcome and warmth I have received from the many individuals and groups I have met – from Women’s Institute members to Jewish Society students, from community gatherings at Mosques to Ecumenical meetings, from Steiner pupils to Quakers. Everywhere I have gone, I have been met by a great spirit of goodwill and hope which makes me optimistic about the future. There is a tremendous reservoir of support for our message and this is reflected by the generosity of donors worldwide. The Diocese and Chapter of Hereford Cathedral have just awarded Children of Peace with a most generous gift. Students at Lancaster University did bar work for many months just to send us a wonderful donation and at Brighton University, the Jewish Society recently organised a Stand Up for Peace night to raise funds for our work. It is heart warming to know that so many people care so deeply about the fate of others.
