SIR DEREK JACOBI BECOMES PATRON OF CHILDREN OF PEACE
The Trustees of Children of Peace are delighted to announce that Sir Derek Jacobi
- the distinguished British actor knight - has agreed to become a Patron of our charity.
He joins our other Patron, Madonna and our Royal Patron, Princess Inaara the Begum
Aga Khan. In his official statement to our supporters worldwide, Sir Derek says:
"I am honoured to have been asked to become a Patron of Children of Peace. The children
of the region of whatever nationality or religion have been foremost in my mind when
I hear reports of the conflict in the area. Children hold our future in their hands.
We must assist, guide and support them in bringing a stable, caring and sound resolution
to the past and present conflict. Please help us to understand them and help them
in their need."
SHIRAA ORGANISATION
JOINS CHILDREN OF PEACE

The latest organisation to join our unique "Coalition of Peace" is the well regarded
Shiraa Organisation, located in the Bethlehem district of the West Bank. In this
article, the organisation's Director Hussein Al-Hroub talks about their work:
"Despite the signing of the Oslo Accord by both Palestinians and Israelis in 1993,
Palestinian children have continued to suffer owing to a lack of basic human rights.
More than two thirds of Palestinian society comprises of women and children who live
without social security. Shiraa works to protect children in the Bethlehem District
and we would like to join the Children of Peace network because of its positive impact
on this issue.

The world is in a state of continual change but often change is not progress and
society fails to move forward. Shiraa recognizes that Children of Peace is bringing
about constructive change in the community. It enables children who have suffered
for so long to experience justice and dignity and is committed to creating a world
of peace and security in which generations practice and believe in non-violent ways
of solving conflict. Shiraa particularly supports the goal to respect the needs of
children regardless of their religion, colour, social background or nationality and
Children of Peace's concern that political agendas are set-aside so that all children
are protected. This approach encourages different groups to recognize their common
humanity and to build partnerships to solve the conflict. Children of Peace challenges
society to move away from bias and to recognize that there is equality between all
which gives children the space to express themselves freely.

Shiraa strongly believes in Children of Peace's goals and methodology and would therefore
like to join the Children of Peace network."
AFFILIATE FOCUS:
THE JEZREEL VALLEY MUSIC CENTER

The Jezreel Valley Center is a remarkable organisation - like so many of our affiliates
and was one of the first organisations in the region to join us in our conflict resolution
work to protect all children regardless of community, culture, faith or gender. The
Center is a multicultural home for children, youth and adults - Jews and Arabs alike
- from the entire northern Israeli region, which maintains rich and extensive musical
activity.
In this article, Zohar Dayan from the Center explains their work and its focus on
three main areas that help to enrich each other:
"The Jezreel Valley Center is devoted to enhancing the lives of children and young
people throughout our region to develop a love of music, to enhance musical talent
and to create a strong community bond between young people through artistic and musical
endeavour. We do this through three principal areas:
- Playing and singing schools - where children learn to play an instrument in a group
setting, play in ensembles and sing in a choir, as well as integrating into a music
appreciation / active listening program. Furthermore, conferences take place at the
Center, attended by orchestras, choirs and ensembles in which schoolchildren play
and sing.
- Regional Conservatory - in which students are taught in a wide array of Western and
Eastern instruments by top-rate teachers from all over Israel. The regional conservatory
offers weekly activities to representative performing troupes that appear on stage
in schools, cultural events and national and international conferences. In addition,
the Music Center offers a major in music for matriculation, attended by students
from the entire northern region. The students learn solfege and harmony, music literature,
the history of jazz, Arabic music, composition and are tested on their instrumental
playing / singing.
- Musical projects:
"Tenufa" (momentum) - a program for the advancement and fostering of multicultural
Music education in Israel.
"Mifneh" (a turning point) - Zubin Mehta's program for the advancement and fostering
of outstanding young Jewish and Arab musicians, in conjunction with The Buchman-Mehta
School of Music in Tel Aviv and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
"Begegnungen" (encounters) - a music education venture for fostering and Advancing
musical encounters between youth and adults representing all Religions and nationalities,
under the auspices of the European Union.
"Music in the Valley" - a multicultural music festival in the Jezreel Valley.

We are extremely proud of our multicultural "Shani" Girls' Choir. The singer's of
the "Shani" girl's choir, aged 13-18 are Jewish and Arab, Christian and Muslim, from
the towns and villages of the Central Galilee. The repertoire includes classical
and folk music, as well as songs in Hebrew and Arabic, most of which were arranged
especially for the choir. Performance venues have included the President's residence
in Israel, The Vatican in Rome in the Presence of his holiness Pope Benedict XVI,
and the Mormon Church in Jerusalem. The choir has also been invited to sing at multicultural
events in Germany, Italy and the United States
The Galilee String Orchestra conducted by Zvika Karmeli, was founded in order to
develop the chamber & orchestral playing culture of bow instruments in the Galilee.
Arab and Jewish teenagers are taking part in it, and playing classical music and
eastern & Arab music as well. Various high level Artists, who also Teach in the Jezreel
Valley Music center, are taking part in the orchestra too, inspiring the young generation
and be part of the chamber music culture in the area themselves.
The multicultural youth ensemble "Lauda" for early and world music ensemble endorses
main concepts that are at the core of the Jezreel Valley Art Center activities, such
as:
- A deep understanding of the early music heritage that constitutes a source of nowadays
musical and cultural inspirations.
- The unique experience of performing various musical styles from different cultures,
through a process of learning their folklore traditions.
- Developing the ability to create and perform modern music that absorbs inspiration
from the past and the present, and thus sowing the seeds of a musical future.
There are 14 participants in the ensemble, including male and female vocalists, wind
instrumentalists (flutes, recorders, oboes), western and eastern-style string instrument
players, traditional Arabic instrumentalists (oud, darbuka), and a harpsichordist.
The singers and the musicians in the ensemble - Jews and Arabs, Muslims and Christians
- express in a most beautiful way the unique and diverse Israeli culture of the Jezreel
Valley Art Center.
In September 2007, the center's ensemble represented Israel in the context of musical
and cultural youth meetings that took place in Weimar, Germany.

Central to our philosophy is The Peace and Brotherhood Auditorium. The Jezreel Valley
Multicultural Music Center is a place where people of all ages, ethnic and cultural
backgrounds come to meet and create. In light of the vast growth we have been experiencing
in our education projects in the schools, and a rise in the number of participants
in the many regional and international courses and conferences at the center, an
auditorium large enough to hold concerts, master classes and special events in is
sorely needed.
We are investing much effort in finding the necessary resources to build an auditorium
from which we hope our message of peace and co-existence in the region and beyond
will echo from."

TRUSTEES AGREE MAJOR CHANGE FOR CHILDREN

At the Trustees Meeting held on 27th June 2009, it was unanimously agreed to change
the age range of the children and youth covered by the official objects of the charity
from ages 7-17 to ages 4-17.
Richard Martin, Chairman & Founder of Children of Peace explains:
"The Trustees have agreed to widen the age range of children protected by the charity
because it has become quite clear that important peace education is being conducted
at the pre-school level in both Israel and in Palestine. There is a strong tradition
in both communities to send children to pre-schools and kindergartens and we wanted
to ensure such initiatives came within our area of support."
