FEBRUARY 2009...
CORINNE BAILEY RAE GIVES STRONG SUPPORT
TO CHILDREN OF PEACE

"For me, Children of Peace brings a profound and powerful message of peace to all
sides in the ongoing Middle East conflict. It is one that I strongly believe in and
support."
The Trustees of Children of Peace welcome the talented international singer Corinne
Bailey Rae as a Friend of the charity. Corinne is an English singer-songwriter and
guitarist who released her eponymous debut album Corinne Bailey Rae in February 2006.
She was named the number-one predicted breakthrough act of 2006 in an annual BBC
poll of music critics, Sound of 2006. Corinne became only the fourth female British
act in history to have her first album debut at number one. She was nominated for
Grammy Awards and BRIT Awards, and has won two MOBO Awards. Her music has been used
in a number of leading films and recently she recorded with Herbie Hancock, Wayne
Shorter, and other well-known jazz musicians Joni Mitchell's "River" for Herbie Hancock's
September 2007 Joni Mitchell tribute album "River: The Joni Letters". At the 2008
Grammy Awards, the album won Album of the Year and Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
Giving her reasons for supporting Children of Peace, Corinne says:
"My music reflects my belief in tolerance and understanding, personal hurts and
joys. And I believe these values of reconciliation, peace and hope are needed throughout
the world. For me, Children of Peace brings a profound and powerful message of peace
to all sides in the ongoing Middle East conflict. It is one that I strongly believe
in and support.
It calls for the protection of all children - regardless of their faith, community
and background - the forgotten victims of the conflict.
Children do not choose. Right now they are the innocent bystanders in all of this.
Yet, they are the next generation and we must give them every opportunity to live
normal lives and live in peace with each other.
Children of Peace is a remarkable charity - a groundbreaking model of conflict resolution,
working with grassroots groups and communities in Gaza, Israel, Jordan and the West
Bank on programmes and projects for peace. Please support their work, as I intend
to do."
JEWISH SIXTH FORMERS CHOOSE CHILDREN
OF PEACE AS THEIR 2009 CHARITY
Abigail Kay, the Charities Coordinator, explains why:
"AJ6 is a cross-communal Jewish youth organisation, originally founded in 1977 to
help sixth formers to prepare for University life. Over the years it has evolved,
but it still retains its focus on peer leadership. Every year, during the winter
holidays, there is a five day event, which (as well as being a social event) gives
members the opportunity to vote for a Charity of the Year; throughout the year, it
is the job of the elected Charities Co-ordinator to organise fundraising events in
its aid and to raise the charity's profile.

AJ6 has strong links with Israel and is 'twinned' with the town of Shlomi in the
north of Israel. It's members form strong friendships with the teenagers there. To
make peace in the country a reality, action is more important than words. The suffering
of any child is terrible, and so choosing Children of Peace as the Charity of the
Year is a way of aiming to both protect the immediate well-being of children and
to make the dream of peace a reality.

It is an AJ6 tradition that the focal fundraisers of the year are 'Balls' aimed at
Jewish youth in years 11 to 13; on top of these, however, there will be several more
events, and a strong focus on social action. The organisation will run its own collection
for the Hope Flowers appeal, and there are plans to organise social events with youth
of different religions. In 2009, AJ6 hopes to involve its members in inter-religious
dialogue, and to help in making peace an achievable goal. We also plan to work closely
with the Children of Peace Events Committee."
