HER HIGHNESS
THE BEGUM AGA KHAN
IS THE ROYAL PATRON OF CHILDREN OF PEACE
Her Highness Princess Gabriele Inaara The Begum Aga Khan has graciously agreed to
act as the Royal Patron to Children of Peace. Her Highness joins our other Patron
– Madonna.
The Begum Aga Khan is passionate about protecting children and actively promotes
understanding and tolerance amongst varied ethnic and religious communities. In March
2007, the Begum travelled to Palestine and Israel at the invitation of the Deputy
Prime Minister of Israel, Mr Shimon Peres, in support of peace-building projects
amongst Palestinian and Israeli children. During her visit the Begum met with various
religious and political leaders in the region and called for the promotion of tolerance
as the foundation for lasting peace in the Middle East.
The German born Princess Gabriele read jurisprudence and graduated 1990 magna cum
laude with a doctorate on German-American commercial law and later became a consultant
to UNESCO in Paris, advising on the promotion of equality and improved conditions
for women. In May 1998, she married Prince Karim Aga Khan IV and became the Begum
Aga Khan.
Since 1999, the Begum has been supporting micro-loans and third world development
projects and from 2004 she has become intensively involved in the fight against AIDS/HIV.
In March 2007 at the Conference of EU Ministers on AIDS, the Begum along with the
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Minister of Health, Ulla Schmidt, appealed
to the international community to join forces in tackling AIDS/HIV with renewed vigour.
The Princess Inaara Foundation was established in 2004 to provide philanthropic assistance
to the causes and charitable organisations whose work represents the humanitarian
goals that the Begum has long supported.
Chairman and Founder of Children of Peace, Richard Martin says "we are honoured that
Her Highness, the Begum Aga Khan has agreed to support our work. I know she agrees
that both Israeli and Palestinian children have been neglected by the outside world
and she is determined to help us to build peace bridges between all of the children
and their communities.”
