OUR 2011 10K LONDON
RUN TEAM ACHIEVE BEST EVER RESULT

On 10th July 2011 our team of dedicated runners ran the Annual London 10K - passing
some of the great sights of London - and many of them surpassed their previous personal
best, all averaging around 58 minutes.
Organised by the Children of Peace Events Committee - Chaired by Dominic Martin and
Deputy Chair Alex Reed , the team have participated in the 10K London Run for four
years. Year on year, the team raise much needed funds for the charity and this year
- despite economic uncertainties - have been able to raise over £3400 - their best
ever year for sponsored donations to date.
Chairman, Richard Martin says:
"We are all very proud of our team. Some have participated every year for the charity
and we value their dedication and commitment. We also very much welcome our new runners
and hope they will also continue to support this important fundraising event in the
years ahead. All have achieved a great success and have worked so hard in helping
to raise funds for our work in Israel and Palestine."
SHANI CHOIR INVITED TO PRESTIGIOUS
THREE CHOIRS FESTIVAL, JULY 2012
ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN GIRLS CHOIR SPONSORED
BY CHILDREN OF PEACE

The Hereford Three Choirs Festival 2012 Committee has invited the Shani Choir to
participate in the Three Choirs Plus Programme during the Festival Week.
The Shani Choir consists of up to 30 Israeli and Palestinian girls, aged from 12
to 18 who have attained concert performance standards - a superlative repertoire
that includes John Lennon, Palestrina and modern Arabic and Hebrew compositions.
The girls will make a first visit to the UK to take part in the Festival, which will
be set in Hereford between July 21st - 28th 2012.

There is already significant media interest in this event and a Shani Choir Committee
has been set up - chaired by Cllr. Marcelle Lloyd Hayes - who so successfully helped
organise our Gaza aid shipment in 2007 - to organise the visit.
The Three Choirs Festival has ben held each year since the early eighteenth century,
and rotates between the three great cathedral cities of Gloucester, Worcester and
Hereford. It is one of the world's oldest classical choral music festivals. This
heritage has long established the festival as a firm fixture in the British music
calendar and a must-visit for lovers of the great choral works from across Britain,
Europe, America and Australasia.

Sir Edward Elgar played a pivotal role in the international success of the Festival
as a resident of Hereford and notable compositions by Delius, Vaughan Williams, Finzi,
Kodaly, Holst, Walton and Britten were either premiered or showcased at this major
festival of music.
If you wish to book tickets for this unique and moving experience, wish to sponsor
or support the Choir or simply wish to know more, please contact the Shani Committee

THREE NEW TRUSTEES JOIN OUR BOARD

Jessica Woolley
Three new Trustees have now joined our Board of Trustees, following their Election
at our Annual General Meeting on 25th June 2011. They join our talented and diverse
Board and each brings with them a clear commitment to the vision and purpose of Children
of Peace.

Clare Bolt
The new Trustees are Clare Bolt, Antonia Leslie & Jessica Woolley. Clare is a successful
BBC journalist and has been a member of our Events Committee from it's outset; Antonia
joined Children of Peace as an Intern and is a publicist at a leading UK publisher
and Jessica joins us after a period of fundraising for the charity and works in local
government.

Antonia Leslie
Jessica also stood as the Secretary to the Board and was duly elected by an unaminous
vote at the meeting. Antonia also acts as our Viral Network Administrator and Clare
is the Editor of our new quarterly online newsletter: Olive Branch, planned to launch
in Autumn 2011.
Chairman, Richard Martin says:
"We are indeed delighted to have such a remarkable group of enthusiastic and talented
individuals joining our Board. I am sure they will add much to our work in the region."
One Trustee, Paul Burger stood down at the AGM because of personal & work commitments
and the Chairman expressed his gratitude to Paul for his service to Children of Peace
at the AGM. Paul remains committed to the charity and will act as an adviser to the
Chairman in the years to come.
CHAIRMAN MEETS 16 PALESTINIAN TEACHERS AT STEINER ACADEMY, HEREFORD

On Tuesday 12th July, Chairman and Founder of Children of Peace, Richard Martin gave
a talk to 16 Palestinian teachers at the Steiner Academy, near Hereford, United Kingdom.
The teachers were in the UK at the invitation of the ASHA Centre in Gloucestershire
and they visited the Steiner Academic in their role as Steiner Waldorf teachers in
Israel and in Palestine. The Principal of the Steiner Academy and a Trustee of Children
of Peace, Mr Trevor Mepham had arranged for the meeting to take place.
The teachers represented various schools, including Tamrat El Zeittun in Galil, Israel
and others were from Jenin and towns in the West Bank. Following a brief talk by
Mr Martin, the teachers all expressed great interest in supporting or working with
Children of Peace to bring our message to a wider public in Israel and Palestine.
Several wished to participate in our planned SchoolsLink programme, others would
encourage students to become Youth Ambassadors and several suggested we introduce
headline sections on our website in Arabic and Hebrew, which our team will now arrange
to do.
DAVID BADDIEL AND KARL JENKINS CBE
BECOME FRIENDS OF CHILDREN OF PEACE

David Baddiel

Karl Jenkins CBE
The Trustees of Children of Peace are delighted to welcome comedian and writer David
Baddiel and the renowned composer Karl Jenkins CBE as Friends of Children of Peace.
They join a distinguished list of international public figures who strongly support
our non partisan, conflict resolution principles.
~~~
David Baddiel is a British comedian, novelist and television presenter. Following
a successful career as a stand-up comedian on the London circuit and a flourishing
radio and television career Baddiel formed a partnership with Frank Skinner in both
Fantasy Football League - which ran on BBC Two from 1994 to 1996, returning on ITV
for the 1998 World Cup and 2004 European Championship - and Unplanned, which started
life as an Edinburgh Fringe show in 2000 before transferring to the West End and,
eventually, TV.
In 1996, the pair teamed up with the Lightning Seeds' Ian Broudie to record the England
football anthem Three Lions, which has been a terrace favourite ever since.
Outside of these comic partnerships, Baddiel created the 2001 Sky One sitcom Baddiel's
Syndrome and devised the Radio 4 panel show Heresy, which attempts to challenge received
opinion. In 2009 he appeared in the 3rd series of Skins, alongside his real-life
partner.
He has written three novels : Time For Bed, Whatever Love Means and The Secret Purposes
and writes a regular literary column for The Times. He also wrote the 2010 comedy
film The Infidel, starring Omid Djalili as a Muslim who discovers his parents were
actually Jewish.
~~~
Karl Jenkins CBE is one of the world's leading contemporary classical composers with
a distinguished career spanning several decades. As a composer, his breakthrough
came with the crossover project Adiemus. Jenkins has conducted the Adiemus project
in Japan, Germany, Spain, Finland, the Netherlands, and Belgium, as well as London's
Royal Albert Hall and Battersea Power Station. The Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary (1995)
album topped the classical album charts. It spawned a series of successors, each
revolving around a central theme.
Jenkins was the first international composer and conductor to conduct the University
of Johannesburg Kingsway Choir led by Renette Bouwer, during his visit to South Africa
as the choir performed his The Armed Man: A mass for peace together with a 70 piece
orchestra.
Jenkins holds a doctorate in music from the University of Wales. He has been made
both a fellow and an associate of the Royal Academy of Music, and a room has been
named in his honour. He also has fellowships at Cardiff University, the Royal Welsh
College of Music and Drama, Trinity College Carmarthen and Swansea Metropolitan University,
and was presented by Classic FM with the award for outstanding service to classical
music.
He was awarded an honorary doctorate in music from the University of Leicester, the
Chancellor's Medal from the University of Glamorgan and honorary visiting professorships
at Thames Valley University, London College of Music and the ATriUM, Cardiff.
Jenkins was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2005
New Year Honours and Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2010
Birthday Honours.
Chairman and Founder of Children of Peace, Richard Martin states that "....everyone
at Children of Peace is delighted that David and Karl have become Friends of our
charity and that both support this important work for peace in the region and above
our work in protecting all children in Israel and Palestine."
THE CHILDREN OF PEACE INTERVIEW II
In this month's Children of Peace other interview Trustee Sarah Brown talks to Aftab
Ahmed, the Director of the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Jordan, about
World Interfaith Harmony Week.

HH King Abdullah II of Jordan
World Interfaith Harmony Week was initiated by H.M. King Abdullah II of Jordan, and
last year the UN unanimously agreed that it should be adopted as an annual event
to be observed during the first week of February. Dedicating one week a year to the
work of interfaith groups highlights the efforts of those whose work often goes unnoticed,
and offers a platform which encourages groups and individuals to become aware of
each other and forge partnerships. World Interfaith Harmony Week has received letters
of support from around the world, from those of many different faiths, and from those
of none.
Sarah Brown: What have been the greatest challenges to World Interfaith Harmony Week?
Aftab Ahmed: The greatest challenge was the UN Resolution. King Abdullah II of Jordan
first proposed it at the UN General assembly in September 2010, and then it was formally
presented by HRH Prince Ghazi just over a month later. To have it passed without
even a vote shows how much effort was spent to get all aboard. With this mandate,
acceptance of the idea is much easier because of the feeling that it is not someone's
personal agenda, or that it belongs to one group or another; it really belongs to
everyone, and so there has been no opposition.
SB: I've heard people suggest that interfaith initiatives 'preach to the converted',
and only attract interest from those who are already committed to working with all
people of good will. Can you respond to that criticism?
AA: I would tend to agree with that, but it's not just a negative thing. Preaching
action to the converted is just as important as preaching to the unconverted. I believe
that there are many more people of goodwill in the world than those of illwill, But
the actions of the latter are having a disproportionate impact on our lives, and
this is partly because those of goodwill are in the camp of the 'silent majority'.
We hope that this initiative will galvanise these people to speak up, and take action.
Also, we need to show the forces who are against this message of peace that we can
be organised and well-resourced. Finally, these initiatives do convince people who
are sitting on the fence to join the cause.
SB: Have any of your initiatives been aimed at children or schools?
AA: There are three major initiatives which we have been associated with, namely:
1. the Amman Message [released by H.M. King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein in Amman,
Jordan in 2005] , 2. the Common Word [a document sent by 138 Muslim scholars, clerics
and intellectuals in 2007] and now 3. the World Interfaith Harmony Week . These ideas
have been used in schools both nationally and internationally. We hope that this
continues to grow and that the messages of all three initiatives are heard by as
many people as possible.
SB: Have you had any responses from, or dealings with, members of the different faith
communities in Israel and Palestine?
AA: There was a very positive response from President Mahmoud Abbas to King Abdullah
II's letter about WIHW. Also, we have had His Beatitude THEOPHILOS III Patriarch
of Jerusalem support us by giving a speech at the Baptism Site event which was hosted
by HRH Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad during the WIHW. We have also had various Israeli
organisations organise events in both Israel and the Palestinian Territories.

Theophilus
SB: How would you like to see WIHW develop over the coming years?
AA: Obviously we would like its message to reach as many places of worship and schools
as possible. Further, we hope that people from all walks of life get involved. We
hope that the 'silent majority' realise that they must speak out and act, and stop
the hijacking of our societies by 'loud minority' voices. It is a platform from which
people of goodwill throughout the world can host a small event and know that they
are part of a huge movement. The only resource that is needed is that of goodwill,
and of that there is ample supply in the world; I am sure of that. It just needs
to be encouraged.
SB: Do you support the work of Children of Peace?
AA: Children of Peace is working towards the noblest aim one can have in this life
- peace. I fully support their aim of promoting peace between the different communities
of the Holy Land.
